VolubilisRUINS! Volubilis was first founded in the 3rd century BC, and was taken over by Rome in the 1st century AD. Unfortunately it fell in 285 shortly after a spate of building activity. It was settled until the 11th century, after which the population moved to the nearby town of Moulay Idriss (visible on the hill). The ruins were intact until the earthquake of 1755, and have been partially excavated since the 19th century. It is a World Heritage Site and is notable for being rather well preserved, particularly the mosaics. |
