KandyThe second largest city in the country, and the capital of the Kingdom of Kandy from 1469 to 1815, Kandy is in the hilly center of the island on a river. The Kingdom was known for the ease with which Hindu and Buddhist communities intermingled, and temples in smaller towns even have joint temples. We visited several of these in the surrounding hills, enjoying the intricate carving and shared symbolism.
