DambullaThe Dambulla cave temple is a complex of five cave temples dating to the 1st century BCE. Each cave tells a different story from the life of the Buddha, decorated with murals on every surface and dozens of statues. The murals are beautifully preserved after an effort in the 1960s, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Outside the caves is a bodhi tree and temple. At the base of the hill is a newer temple, which for unknown reasons has a line of slightly prefab monk statues leading toward it. |
