Anuradhapura

This World Heritage Site was the Sinhalese capital from the 4th century BCE to the 11th century.  Today it is a holy Buddhist site, surrounded by ancient temples.  It is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.  

Some of the 8 main sites are shown below:

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred Bodhi tree planted in the 2nd century BCE

Lovamahapaya, a former palace noted for its 40 rows of 40 stone pillars

Jetavanaramaya, the tallest stupa of the ancient world at 120m, constructed of over 90 million bricks

There are also a series of photos from Kuttam Pokuna, two well-preserved bathing pools.

Speaking of bathing, the day we visited there was torrential rain, which explains the distinctly damp quality to these photos.
