Madaba

A town on the King's Highway, most notable for a mosaic map, created on the floor of a Christian church sometime in the 6th century.  While building a new church on the site of its predecessor, the mosaic was uncovered and preserved.  The map covers a huge area, from the Nile delta up to Lebanon, and shows some of the cities of the time in great detail (such as Jerusalem).
