AzraqA large fortress to the east of Amman, built originally during the 4th century and rebuilt in 1237. Features a large courtyard with a small mosque in the center. The solid-stone doors into the fortress weigh over a ton each, but still move easily due to liberal use of palm tree oils. Because it is constructed on one of the few sources of water for many miles, this location was used by several civilizations, and served briefly as T.E.Lawrence's headquarters during 1917. |
