MandalayMandalay became the capital of Burma under King Mindon in the mid-19th century, and remained the largest city of upper Burma even after the capital moved to Yangon under the British. The city was laid out as a large square grid, with a fortified palace in the center. One of the coolest sites is the “World’s Largest Book”, the Kuthodaw Pagoda, which is a collection of 729 small stupa each with a stone carved with a portion of the Tipitaka. |
