Most tourists today journey from Aswan to Luxor by boat, generally taking three or four days to slowly cruise along, stopping at archeological sites along the way. The boats are large for a river, more like floating Sheratons than anything else, and specifically built to just barely fit through the lock at Esna. Sitting on deck, watching the Nile slowly pass by, is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon between temples, and provides some more insight into the rural life of Egypt. One of the most entertaining parts of the journey is the jockeying for position at the Esna lock, as dozens of boats attempt to make it through to Luxor in under 12 hours.
