Luxor is a small town located on the site of ancient Thebes, the capital of Upper Egypt and the site of the temples of Amon-Re. After Thebes was abandoned, the town slowly drifted away. In the Napoleonic era, the village was small and sleepy. Although it has grown to over 100,000 inhabitants, it retains a sense of quiet and calm. The town sits on the avenue between the temples of Luxor and Karnak, across the Nile from the Valley of the Kings.
