Cairo has been a center of Islam since it first arrived in 640, and today many of the world's most beautiful mosques can be found in and around the city. The Citadel of the Mamelukes on a hill above Cairo was the seat of government under Mohammed Ali, eventually including civil, religious, and miltary buildings within its walls. Each mosque is different, each in a different style. The minarets above the city run the gamut from simple to Ottoman ornate.
