Doi Suthep is the most famous temple of Chiang Mai, on a hilltop outside
the city. Legend has it that a monk placed a Buddha statue on the back
of an elephant, determined to build a temple wherever the elephant may stop.
The elephant charged forward, climbing a tall hill. Finally,
at the crest of the hill, it stopped and trumpeted, signaling the site of
the new temple. The result is a gem of Thai architecture, kept in pristine
condition and gleaming in the sun above the city. You can see the light
winking off the stupa from all around the city.
