The Chao Praya river flows from the Thai highlands to Bangkok.  Ayudhaya, the ancient capital, lies on the river an hour or so north of Bangkok.  Bang Pa-In is the summer palace of the royal family, situated near Ayudhaya.  The grounds are landscaped with exquisite care, dotted with small buildings of every imaginable style.
