In the hills of Guatemala, surrounded by volcanos, lies the colonial capital Antigua. The center of the city was badly damaged in several earthquakes, and was eventually left behind when the capital was moved to Guatemala City. This abandonment proved to be highly beneficial, as the city was unchanged for hundreds of years and is now the finest example of colonial architecture in the world. It has become a popular destination, with shopping, hotels, and restaurants.
