Sule

Sule Pagoda (Yangon)

The Sule Pagoda was originally established as a Buddhist shrine by monks around 230 B.C, at the base of Singuttara Hill. As the city grew, the shrine remained much of the focus of social and religious life. Much later, when the British were establishing a system of roads for Yangon, they used the existing structure as the center point -- to the point of building a large traffic circle around the 157-ft. shrine.

Today, the pagoda's spire still remains one of the tallest structures in the town area, and is surrounded by government structures such as Yangon City Hall, the Supreme Court, and the High Court building.
