Bagan Environs
On the road from the Bagan airport to Mount Popa, the countryside is dotted with small villages and homesteads. The many palm trees are tapped for palm wine, while the fields contain peanuts and other crops amenable to the sandy, dry area. Each town has a small, golden pagoda and shrine, often enclosed by a small yard. Although some are clearly centuries old, and the paint may be somewhat peeling, the offerings are fresh and flowers are on every altar.
